Zoe Meme #106: Circumspect

When our oldest daughter first brought over Milly, we were pleased with her good nature and lovable personality. Two unique things stood out: her speed with running and turning, and her cautious approach to food. I’ll maybe cover her deft ability with speed later.

Milly is the first dog I’ve met that is cautious with food. When I say cautious, her approach toward food is almost like a piece of food nipped at her nose sometime in the past,  traumatizing her.

It takes her a long time to actually put food in her mouth. Take Zoe’s canned cheese treat as an example. We keep this same can of cheese as an occasional treat for good behavior. It is surprising this can has lasted so long, as my granddogter’s have excellent behavior.

I decided to offer a canned cheese treat to Milly a while back. This dog is a mess.

Milly normally bounces right up to me, especially if play time is involved with her rope toy. Yet, when I am holding a treat of canned cheese ready for her to sample, she is so slow and cautious, I have to keep coaxing her just to get her nose near the treat.

What you see in this meme’s photo, is a dog who is careful about wanting to sample the food. She walks up slowly and pauses, almost as if she is in trouble. Then looks at it careful through the one eye. She stands there, literally stands there for almost a full minute just slowly moving her nose toward it, not sure if the food is going to bite back at her or jump at her.

This was an easy photo to take. She just stood there, watchful and discrete, being cautious with her approach to some good smelling edible yummy stuff. I couldn’t help but marvel at Milly’s circumspect attitude to delicious human food.

Zoe Meme #105: Related

Best friends, cousins, and all around rascals. These two love to get together and watch my every move in the magical place called the human’s kitchen.

Notice how Milly’s ear is bent back? That is her way of saying “am I not the sweetest most humble and innocent of everything I’ve never done granddogter you’ve ever known?”

Zoe sits there with a smirk on her face, legs crossed, ready to dash into the most amazing place in the house, the human’s magical kitchen, in order to get the slightest morsel of food.

Milly is rather timid with food. I have to say, she is probably the first dog I’ve been around that is not ruled by her stomach. She is careful, finicky, and rather polite with her food. I’ve never seen a more cautious pup when it comes to food.

The smallest critter has the biggest appetite. The one who moves fastest, Mrs Milly, just hangs back and lets little zip zip run after all the food. I suppose this goes to show it is all relative.

Milly is going to be featured all of next month so I can illustrate carefully her approach to food. It will be a whole month of Milly.

Zoe Meme #104: Gleeful!

Milly is my oldest daughter and son-in-law’s uber-mutt. She and Zoe are cousins and best friends. That would make Milly my oldest granddogter! This rescue pup is a delight. She is sappy, sweet, happy, and fast.

I mean this dog is fast.

She can cut a 90 degree turn at nearly full speed. Catching her is hopeless. Even food doesn’t work, as you will see. I plan on devoting the whole month of March as “Milly Month.” You’ll see why, she is such an unusual dog when it comes to food. So much so, it will take a month of memes to illustrate my point about her and food. First dog I’ve met that is so selective and cautious where food is concerned.

She loves to go bye-bye. Look at that face, just look at that face! She is a beautiful happy sappy granddogter who is a delight to her grampy!

Did I mention she loves to go bye-bye?

Get ready as March will be Milly’s month of memes!

Zoe Meme #103: Astonishment

For those newly joining Zoe Memes, Zoe in Greek means “life.” I have a recurring set of characters in my life, one of which is our lazy old fat worthless cat. Dang I love this cat! She was born about 20 feet to the left of this picture in our bathroom, circa 2005-ish. She loves tuna, anything to do with tuna. She used to be quite the hunter, leaving regular surprises at our front and back door only identifiable by fur, or a tail, or feathers.

She’s getting older now and rather lazy. With her advancing age she has slowed down some and her belly has grown … um… HUGE?!

I’m sitting on the couch and look to my left and this is what I see. This cat is so rotten. Does that look comfortable to you? Could she possibly be happy?

Her belly MUST be pushing into her diaphragm, making it hard to breath. I mean, this cat has such a belly full of TUNA that there is no way that could be comfortable.

She was purring so loudly it was obnoxious. She remained sprawled out for some time on the couch, purring, and appearing like she was in kitty-cat heaven on the human’s fluffy couch.

I have to say, I was astonished.

Zoe Meme #102: Adjectives

Like I explained last week, I won’t have a pet, any pet, unless they spoiled rotten, completely lazy, and 100% worthless.

What are pets for unless we lavish proper spoilin’ upon them?

The more rotten and worthless a pet is, the better they are.

Are there enough adjectives in this world to describe a pet who is truly loved? I think not! But I’ll offer three adjectives and the photographic evidence to back up my take on this rotten dog.

Zoe Meme #101: Ploofah

I tell you what, this dog is so spoiled, rotten, and worthless. For the record, I will NOT have a pet that is not spoiled, rotten, and worthless. Quite honestly, the more spoiled, rotten, and worthless a pet is, the better the job the owner has done as lavishing love, attention, and affection upon their pet!

Now, onto today’s regular programming. This is a Poodle Loofah, a one of a kind rotten, stinking, worthless toy poodle tightly curled into a ball resembling a shower device that cleans the skin. She needed rest after her hard day in the human’s magical kitchen!

Life Just Cant’ Get Any Weirder For Me

I received a phone call Friday, January 27th, from my oncologist. He woke me up. Let me share that this is a first for him to call me randomly like this. Needless to say, I was instantly awake and ready to hear what he had to say. The adrenaline rush was on.

He said an irregular lab value showed up on my two year tests performed in December 2016. Specifically, the ferritin level is high. He stated it was over 1600. The highest it should be is about 340. That is about 4.7 times higher than it should be.

So doc, what do we do about this high ferritin level? You ready my friends? How about a good old fashioned blood letting. Maybe I’ll go to the Roman Vomitorium after I visit the leech room. It just sounds barbaric.

So here’s the plan. I’ll undergo “therapeutic phlebotomy” for 6 months as a starter regimen. That means they will take out approximately 1 unit of blood (about 1/2 liter, or 500 mls) each month for six months. The body uses ferritin to help build new red blood cells. By forcing the body to have to build more RBC’s, it will start to lower the ferritin levels. That is the goal, anyways.

What are the side effects of too high of ferritin?

  • stomach pain
  • heart palpitations or chest pains
  • weakness
  • joint pain
  • fatigue

I have every symptom. The stomach pain hasn’t been too bad, but it does happen, but mild. The chest pains have been like a tightness in the chest. The joint pain has been acute. I blame it on arthritis, but maybe this is the cause? My knuckles are currently swollen and the left knee has been giving me problems for a week now. Fatigue and weakness are my constant companions, to the point I figured they are normal for a post stem cell transplant patient. But maybe that can improve.

So what exactly is ferritin? Ferritin isn’t iron directly, as much as a protein that mammals produce that stores to iron for later use. Each ferritin protein stores about 4,000 iron molecules in the liver and the immune system (reticuloendothelial system). When the body needs more iron for RBC production, these little taxi cabs called transferritin show up and escort the ferritin to the place where RBC’s are made. Then the iron is transferred over to the RBC’s and walla, less ferritin in the body. Regular blood letting will force myself to make more RBC’s more rapidly, thereby reducing the amount of ferritin in the body.

Guess who JUST crossed the line from anemic to normal red blood cell count in December 2016 at his two year post stem cell check up? Yep, yours truly. I was so proud of my body. I have been anywhere from weakly anemic (not enough red blood cells) to powerfully anemic since July 2014 when the chemotherapy began.

My anemia is the reason for my high ferritin levels. I received blood transfusions during chemo but not that many with one exception. A stem cell transplant doesn’t heal because of stem cells, it heals by using chemo about 4 times the amount necessary to kill a body. What keeps the person from dying overall is the constant blood transfusions and the stem cells infused into the body at a specific time intervals after the hyper amount of chemo is infused. The chemo overwhelms the cancer and the body, the body is rescued by blood transfusions and stem cells. The cancer dies, the body stays alive. This infusion of blood products is the reason for my high ferritin.

Time to become anemic again. Actually though, the fella on the phone who called to set up the “therapeutic phlebotomy” (good old fashioned blood letting in my parlance) stated I should not become anemic during this process. We’ll see. I’ll believe that when I see it, although it does sound reassuring. Call me a skeptic.

These procedures will take about 40 minutes each time. I’ll go in, an IV will be started, and they will begin to suck blood (therapeutically release) out of my body gradually. He told me to drink and eat well before each session. That won’t be an issue, judging by my gut.

After six months, we will reassess this situation and possibly stop or possibly continue, based on my ferritin level. I tell you what, life just can’t get any weirder for me. I mean, I guess it could (this is not a challenge!), but seems I’m experiencing it all.

I’ll keep you all posted.
